We from the Fanajana e. V. association would like to start by thanking the wonderful artist Hinnerk Bodendieck, the ingenious Pantaenius Group and the many art lovers with purchasing power. They have all made it possible that such a large sum of money has been collected in such a short time. It is almost unbelievable! We promise to use the money responsibly and sustainably in our projects in southwest Madagascar.

The COVID 19 pandemic, which is currently changing all our lives considerably, is - as the name already describes - a worldwide event. Of course, the virus is now also spreading rapidly in Madagascar, where there are not enough treatment options, let alone intensive care beds, and where people have hardly any possibility to protect themselves and others. Many women and children suffer from malnutrition or other pre-existing conditions that weaken the immune system. A large proportion of the people in southwest Madagascar do not even have the opportunity to wash their hands with soap and water.

Of course we are in regular contact with "our" doctors and midwives in the small health centres we support in the villages of Ejeda and Gogogo in southwest Madagascar. The call for protective masks and soap for the staff of the health centres, but also for the village population could not be ignored and came already a few days ago via WhatsApp. We have already transferred the first 400 Euros directly to the mobile phone account of "our" midwife Tsiory in Go4 via secure and familiar channels. Tsiory immediately bought kilograms of soap and fabric for protective masks. She gave the fabric to local seamstresses, who can now make a total of 1,500 masks. That is great!

With further shares of the donations we will finance a water project to supply a small school as well as additional equipment for the health centres. You can follow our work and the further flow of the donations on our website at www.fanajana.de. There you will also find our contact details. Let us stay in contact within the possible framework of social distancing!

Thank you very much,

Claudia Unruh and Dr. Martin Frank

And should we also wear a mask, we will be sailing again!

How do you distract your gaze for a moment from the Elbe River? The best way is to place a Japanese cherry on the bank.

Sunday afternoon. The chemical tanker John Augustus Essberger, coming from Köhlfleet, turns into the main fairway of the Elbe. The pilot boat on starboard will go alongside. If the weather stays like this I will forget how to paint clouds.

We're staying at the Côte. Last year in Port La Napoule, on the way by bike from Port de la Rague to the boat show in Cannes this yacht looks at me. Why do I look back? Because the three randoms are sitting on top of it like Mickey Mouse ears?

For me, the dream of the south is also always the one to the Côte d'Azur. Here BONA FIDE sails off Saint Tropez. An Italian construction from 1899, at that time already with a fin keel and spade rudder. We admired its speed and springy gaff rig.

A walk in Teufelsbrück on the Elbe, a view that captivates me. No, not the look of a passer-by, but the look of a painted young Woman. The Dream of the South is the title of an exhibition, a note on the poster informs about the Corona-related closure.
Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873) painted this Italian girl.

Yesterday, the world's brightest and largest full moon of the year shone - the earth satellite will not come that close again this year. For me reason enough to document its appearance over the Elbe near Neumühlen.

Whoever wants to sail in Saint Tropez now needs memories and imagination. Years ago we accompanied the big yachts on their way back from the regatta back to the harbour. The longing for sailing lets the pictures of that time reappear.

Sunday afternoon we have cake. In this case, mainly because it's so colorful. The queue at the bakery was three times as long as usual - because of the large distances between the waiting people.

Tribute to Hopper: The feuilleton sees parts of the work of Edward Hopper (1931-1967) as reflecting our current situation. An occasion for me to look again at the seascapes of one of my favourite painters and to get closer to the secret of his art by painting one of his most beautiful pictures.

At the Elbe in Hamburg, people are still allowed to walk with restrictions. Like many others, I enjoy the blossoming nature and make a portrait of the daffodils on the shore.

Despite all the restrictions caused by the virus: On a Sunday, ships arrive in Hamburg and in pairs and at a distance, people enjoy the arrival of spring along the Elbe. In the background, the bulk carrier VIIKI is sailing towards the North Sea.
