First aid - anyone can save lives

Providing first aid in an emergency is a civic duty incumbent on us all. When the situation arises, however, many people are unable to help.

Most people take a first aid course once in a lifetime, in order to pass their driving test. Frequently, after such a long time, they lack even the most basic knowledge of first aid. We therefore recommend that you refresh your knowledge on a regular basis, not least because medicine is constantly evolving. The German Red Cross, the Workers' Samaritan Federation, St John’s Accident Assistance and other organisations offer appropriate courses throughout Germany for a small fee.

In addition to know-how, good emergency equipment is also very important at sea. A simple first-aid box, such as may be found in a car, is not enough on board, because professional help is usually far away. Especially in the case of longer trips, the standard items should be supplemented with additional equipment, such as a resuscitation bag, a suction pump for the airways, a defibrillator and an emergency pharmacy. Information on this can be provided by specialist dealers and in the relevant literature. In the event of an emergency at sea where people’s health or even life is at risk, not only should first-aid be given but a distress call should also be made to notify other vessels and the maritime rescue services.
