LOVE YOUR RIB LONGER: Breathing New Life into Your RIB
Why Thoughtful RIB Care Matters More Than Most Owners Realise
“Ultimately, loving a RIB longer is not just about keeping it looking good. It is about recognising that a boat built for adventure can keep delivering - season after season - when it is cared for in the right way.”

RIBs have earned a loyal following for good reason. They are practical, versatile and capable - equally at home as family adventure platforms, coastal explorers or dependable tenders.
Yet despite their durability, RIBs are sometimes viewed as disposable once the years begin to show.
In reality, many well-built RIBs have far more life left in them than owners might assume. With the right care - and sometimes a little specialist expertise - a tired RIB can be refreshed and enjoyed for many more seasons on the water.
Increasingly, owners are discovering that looking after a RIB properly is not simply about maintenance. It is about understanding how to extend the life of the boat they already have.
When a RIB deserves a second life
If the hull of a RIB remains structurally sound, almost everything else can be restored or replaced. This is where specialist refurbishment comes into its own.
Companies such as RIB Shop work with owners whose boats still have sound hulls but whose tubes have reached the natural end of their lifespan. Rather than replacing the entire boat, many owners now choose to refurbish - saving cost, reducing waste and returning a trusted craft to full performance.
Tubes naturally age over time through exposure to ultraviolet light, abrasion and the general demands of life on the water. PVC tubes typically last around 10 to 15 years, while premium materials such as Hypalon can last 20 years or more when properly maintained.
Where tubes have deteriorated due to sun damage, abrasion or accidental puncture, re-tubing can completely transform a RIB. The process is meticulous but surprisingly efficient. Old tubes are removed, templates are created and new tubes are constructed before the hull is carefully prepared and bonded. Following pressure testing, and final fitting, the result is often remarkable - a boat that once looked tired returning to the water refreshed, reliable and ready for many more seasons.
For many owners, the experience reinforces a simple point: a well-built RIB rarely reaches the end of its useful life as quickly as people assume.
Protecting tubes before problems develop
While refurbishment can breathe new life into a RIB, thoughtful maintenance plays an equally important role in prolonging the life of the tubes themselves.
Regular cleaning, for example, is about far more than keeping a boat looking presentable. It also provides the best opportunity to inspect tubes for early signs of abrasion, punctures or seam separation - small issues that can often be addressed long before they develop into more serious damage.
UK marine maintenance specialists August Race have developed the Oceans Assured™ initiative - a range of marine cleaning and operational products formulated to be non-harmful to the marine environment and aligned with MARPOL Annex V’s legal framework. Designed to support consistent preventative care, these products help owners maintain inflatable tubes while ensuring cleaning practices remain compliant for marina and harbour environments.
Sunlight is another factor that owners sometimes underestimate. Ultraviolet exposure remains one of the primary causes of tube ageing, gradually affecting flexibility and appearance. Applying a dedicated UV protectant and using a vented cover when the boat is not in use can help preserve both the integrity and the look of the tubes for far longer.
When boats are cleaned in marinas or harbour areas, wash-down water inevitably finds its way into surrounding waters. For this reason, international MARPOL Annex V regulations require cleaning products discharged into the sea to be classified as non-harmful to the marine environment. Using specialist marine cleaning products designed for tube fabrics not only protects the material itself but also ensures maintenance is carried out responsibly within the environment boating depends upon.
A different way of thinking about RIB ownership
Together, refurbishment and preventative care reflect a shift in how many owners now view their boats. Aging tubes are no longer simply a sign that a RIB has reached the end of its life - with the right maintenance and occasional specialist expertise, many can continue performing beautifully for years to come.
At Pantaenius UK we regularly see how small habits make the biggest difference: rinsing the boat after use, checking tubes during routine cleaning and protecting materials from prolonged sun exposure. None of these steps are complicated, yet together they help ensure a well-loved RIB remains safe, reliable and ready for adventure season after season.
